Have one owner B250/ 194K mileswith what seems to be a moderate chain noise from lower/front of engine. Have disconnected all accessories/belt and noise still present. Is the 318 prone to chain noise/breakage (it's not slapping the cover)? If replaced, is there any updated chain set that could be recommended. Is this an experienced DIY project? Thanks

At 194K I'd say the timing set had a good life...it's time to change it. You can get a timing set with steel gears instead of the stocknylon ones, but it's considerably more noisy.

Any suggestions on type/brand of replacement chains. Have seen single and double row versions along with "roller" chains.
Thanks
