Default Very Hot Brake Drum...leaking axle seal

Hello...first post here

Have a '93 Ram 250 Cargo Van and recently had Pass Side Axle (used), Axle Bearing and outer Seal replaced. The Brake Drum is getting VERY hot (enough to steam when pour water on it!) and the seal is beginning to leak again as well - not enough to drip yet, but it starting to get wet aroung the "hub".

What would cause so much friction to generate this amount of heat? The brake shoes are not sticking (drum comes right off)...could the replacement axle be bent?

Also, the gear ratio tag is missing from the differential, so I put on jack stands and rotated rear wheel and counted drive shaft revolutions to come up with 1.75! This just doesn't seem right!!!

Any assistance / opinions appreciated!

Thanks!

You may have tightened the bearing nut too tight.

Yes the axle, aka a "knuckle" may indeed not be true or not installed "just right". I went through the same problem braking situation until a new axle / knuckle that was true or installed correctly completely solved the problem.

DodgeDog - Thanks for the info! I may be a few weeks before I can look into it again, but it's still getting hot, so don't think it's going to "fix itself"! Maybe it's the same problem you mentioned and wasn't pressed-in "true".
