Turn Key, Nothing Happens

What could be wrong when I turn the key and the vehicle doesn't start. Their is nosound. No click or clunk from the starter solinoid. The battery is strong.
- This happened a couple ofweeks ago, then it started on the second try.
-About 1 week ago it happened again. It wouldn't start with repeated tries. A couple of hours later it started right up like nothing happened.
- It just happened last night. I don't know yet if it will start when I go back to try it again.

You could try the old headlite test, when it won't crank. Turn on the headlites, turn the key to crank, if the lites stay bright, there is an open circuit to the starter. If the lites go out or almost out, it is usually the battery or cables. If this is an automatic, it could be a problem with the neutral switch, try putting it in neutral, see if it will crank.
One way to check the starter circuit is to use a jumper at the starter relay, under the hood. If you try that, your bypassing everything, so make sure the tranny is in park or neutral and the e-brake is set. If the relay has a multi-wire connector going to it, take the connector loose, turn the key on so the dash lites are on, there should be two hot wires at the relay connector, that will show those 2 circuits are ok.
