I am considering purchasing a 1992 350 passenger van but am new to Dodge. Idon't really like the look of the nose of the van and am wondering if the nose of the next series (1996 etc) will fit on the '92. I realize that would mean changing both front fenders, hood, grille, lights, and bumper, but will it fit? Also, I want the van for towing a race car in an enclosed trailer. When I looked at the van, I didn't know to check for 5 or 8 lug wheels. Is there a digit in the VIN which will list the heavy duty suspension and what can I expect the vanto tow with a 5.2L V8+auto trans?

I know, newbie questions, but thanks in advance for the help.

 

I would pass on the 1992 and look for a 1998 or newer, especially if you plan on some serious towing.

The 1992 is a pre-Magnum type of engine. If it has a 5.9L/360cid, it may be worth towing with, but the body tow rating is still lower. Once you hit the 1998 or newer Ram Van/Wagons, the tow ratings are excellent along with a better engine to handle all of that load.

Besides, starting in 1998 and newer, the fuel tank is relocated to the center of the vehicle allowing for a normal hitch to be installed without any major problems. Also, the rear spare tire goes under the van vs hanging on the back door that has issues all it's own.

The 1994 and newer 3.9L V6 Magnum engine has more power than the 1992 5.2L/318cid V8 non-magnum engine!

 

Well, not what I wanted to hear, but it is the info I needed. The van will need work to clean it up, butI should be able to buy it for <$100. Still not worth it if it won't do what I need. Thanks for your help! [sm=hail.gif]
