Default 1993 PCM Swap / Interchangeability

I have a 1993 B150 3.9L 5-Speed manual. MyPCM is badand needs replacement. Anyone know if I need to replace strictly with a 1993PCM or will a 1992/1994/1995PCM (which looks exactly the same) work? Also, since my van is a5-Speed do I have to use aPCM from a MT or can I use one froman Auto Trans donor?

I looked up your van and the PCM that you need will only work on a 1993 3.9L manual trans. Looks like no other years will interchange... Hope this helps....If you get one out of a junk yard, the check engine light will stay on, because the VIN is programmed into the PCM.

OK, thanks for the info. My PCM is 5602 7840. I think a1993 Dakota PCM 5602 7836 should work but I might have to change the front cover from the "cooling vent" type to the "regular" type.

Any idea what ~might~ happen if I try to use a 1992 or 1994 PCM? Can I cook my harness or anything crazy like that? The 60-pin power/data connector between the years is exactly the same so I wouldn't think so, but I'm not nearly experienced enough with Dodge to predict the outcome.

BTW, this is my second PCM (260K miles on van) and the Check Engine light didn't stay on when I changed from my original PCM, so I'm thinking the VIN may not be programmed into these computers for the 1993 model year. For whatever it's worth.

How does the PCM know it's in a different vehicle in order to turn the light on?
