Default Tranny fluid What kind to use?

hello,

Well a guy was helping me with my van and put in a quart of dec/merc fluid in the transmission. Is this good or bad? Will the fluid cause problems / damage to the transmission?

Van 1990 b150 3.6L v6. What is the recommended trans fluid?

thanks,

Though 1 quart of mercon probably wont hurt the tranny, the only fluid which should be put in these trannies is ATF +4, +3 (7176)no longer available.

Why was it a quart low?

Consider dropping the pan, changing the fluid( about 4 quarts), and filter.

there was a leak at the pressurized hose which connects to the radiator. Both inlet and outlet hoses needed to be replace. Most of the fluid came out. I suppose he put more then one quart of fluid.

Then you need to drop the pan and put in the proper amount of ATF+3 (which is still available, at least around here).

Or use ATF+4, a little more expensive but worth it and more widely available.
