Stalling in gear, poor idle, backfireing
Hi guys, new to the forum here anyways i have a question for you guys...
I bought a 67 dodge polara and it rund pretty good, so anyway it's got a newer 318 and such so anyways last week at work a 1994 ram b250 came in and it could not pass inspection, so stoopid *** me went and bought it (with the intention of using as parts), but now i think i'd like to drive it, but i can't figure out what the hell is wrong with it, it chugs ast idle, stalls when you put it in gear and when it warms up forget about boveing it anywhere unless it's downhill... so any thoughs... so far i have:
Changed spark plugs (helpped a bit)
Cut the cat converter thinking it might be melted
added high oc gas
added fuel injector cleaner
fooled with the timing which didn't do anything
and then i took a nap in the back
so thus far i haven't made any progress... i'll get a new cap and rotor tomorrow to see if it helps... what else should i check for? I work at a garage but i'm not a mechanic and barely an apprentice. i could fix an old engine in a flash but this seems a bit stubborn and parts are expensive
please please help me... if i can't get it to work i might part it out and that would be a horrible thing to do to a dodge...
Thanks

Try cleaning the IAC valve first:

Then look for vacuum leaks or possibly an over-stretched timing chain.

nope, no luck, i canged the cap and rotor and it didn't help either... plus now the damn thing smokes like hell for some reason? did i mention it sat for around a year before it arrived in my possession? aNY THOUGHTS AT ALL?
please help me i'm getting discouraged...

death blue, but there is enough compression for it to run properly, but it just dosen't want to... if you rev it up just a bit in park it runs fine... it never smoked before but after i cut the cat off and put on new plugs and stuff it does for some reason?
Run a cylinder compression test and fuel pressure test and post the results. One of the mechanics at the shop you work at should be able to help you with this.

You're burning oil. A ring could've cracked, or the valve seals were dried out from having sat around so long.
Is there any chance that you might have overfilled the crankcase with oil?

ok will do the fuel and comp. test tomorrow... the oil is overfull but once it starts it gets sucked up and then when the oil is checked it's OK the eccess is from the leak down i assume.... is there anything else simple i can check that might be causing this ****ty idle and stalling? should i take it on the highway and see what happens once i get it moving?
How much over is it? Though you start the engine and it looks fine on the stick it is still over filled, that is why Alloro asked if it was overfilled. Drain enough oil out to get the level back in the safe range of the dip stick. Then gently drive the van for a few miles to see if it clears up.
