Good point!

They probably switched from rod to cable with the magnums, but that is a guess.

You will have to look from underneath.

Does the cable on your 97 not originate from the throttle body/ intake area? The rod on mine is attached right to my throttle body.

Yes the cable it hooked up to the same side as the throttle cable on the throttle body. But where the throttle cable come around from the front of the motor the trans shift point/down shift cable come from the trans side. The gear selector linkage is also cable and hooks to the left side of the tranny.

Horton, we've been chasing your transmission problems, trying to help, causing hard feelings between members and wasting a crap load of time and you dont even have OD... geez this is crap!

BTW the gear ratio of your van is on a silver sticker under the hood.

I never said I don't have an overdrive transmission. One would think if there is an OD on/off switch on the dash, then the fricken van should have overdrive. I'm not a mechanic, just a gal who's trying to get this thing fixed right.

I'm amazed that these "mechanics" are having such a hard time determining whether or not this is an OD tranny. It's as simple a matter as looking at the forward wiring harness connector. If it's a 2-wire connector then it's a 3 speed tranny with lock-up. If it's a 3-wire connector then it's an OD tranny with lock-up. If there's no connector then it's just a 3 speed tranny.

Thanks Alloro. If this is referring to the wiring at the OD solenoid, it has 3 wires. I haven't asked these new guys to do anything other than fix the idle contact switch short, which they are doing this morning. Then we will see if the computer can recognize anything beyond idle.

Yes, that's the connector I'm referring to. Since you have the 3-wire connector, I'd say with 99% certainty that you have an OD tranny.

The center wire on this connector is the hot wire and the two other wires are ground wires for overdrive and the lock-up torque converter. The front wire is the overdrive ground and the rear wire is the torque converter lock-up ground.

They found the idle adjustment arm threads were stripped. It has been idling rough(I may have the terminology wrong on that) & randomly stalling. So other owners, can you tell me if the top speed is around 70 for the three speed?

They can recommend the best tranny shop, if the idle switch replacement doesn't cure the lack of OD. I know it;s hard to diagnose this without seeing it, but I at least have a really good game plan from your suggestions.

three times in this last round of posts you're bringing up a 3speed trans. It would a 904 or 727 3speed the 904 with lockup is called a 999.

I've had weirder things from chrysler. I had 2 identical 1990 grand carvans built the same month less than 1000 vin difference. one had a 3speed shift indicator and the other had the overdrive shift indicator. they both had an overdrive trans, same color, same options, same woodgrain.

being you have an OLD van, and an Overdrive trans rebuild or replacement justifies shops to rape ignorant owners, the previous owner(s) may have just tossed in a 3speed and then dumped the van on some unsuspecting yahoo from the north west.
