I mostly read at times like this when my 1994 needs servicing. About 14 mths ago I did quite a lot of motor work. Now its time to do some trans service. I got a case of oil today and a service kit. What I need is info on how to adjust the bands. Thanks in advance.

 

The kickdown band adjusting screw is external to the tranny up in front of the shift lever. The low reverse band adjusting screw is inside the tranny and can only be seen after the pan is removed.

Loosen the locknut, tighten the screw as specified below, then while holding the screw tighten the locknut.

for 1994 transmissions:
Kickdown band - All - 72 in. lbs. then back off 2-1/2 turns
Low/Reverse band - 32RH and 42RH - 72 in. lbs. then back off 4 turns
Low/Reverse band - 36RH, 37RH, 46RH - 72 in. lbs. then back off 2 turns

Let me understand this.
The kickdown band, external, loosen lock nut, when you say, "All" do you mean turn the screw all the way in to 72 in. lbs. than back off 2 1/2 turns.
Why are there 2 low/ reverse choices?

 

"All" as in "ALL" transmissions used in the vans that year. For the L/R band you need to choose the spec. based on which tranny you have installed...the 32RH and 42RH, or the 36RH, 37RH, 46RH.

For each band you loosen the locknut several turns while holding the center screw from turning, then tighten the center screw to 72 in. lbs. then back the center screw off the specified number of turns. Then finally, hold the center screw from turning while tightening the locknut.

Thanks again so now I understand there are 5 possible trannys for my van, I didn't change the tranny so it is stock from when I purchased the van used. How do I determine which tranny I have.

 

If your van has a Magnum engine, chances are, it's going to be a 52RE or a 46RE if it has OD. If the 94 is NOT a Magnum engine Alloro's list will do. 1994 was the split year from the old generation to the new.

 

Does O64-4 mean anything to you guys. This is stamped onto the top of the case of my trans. Also I found a clip in the pan. What do you guys think? Do you know where it is from?
Where are the band adjustments located? I see the external behind the shifting linkage. What side is the internal on?

How do I tell which trans it is?

 

well FYI, I set the external adjustment at 2 1/2 out, and the internal adjustment at 2 out. The adjustment screws on my van are 5/16" square heads. The ex lock nut is 3/4", the in lock nut is 11/16". pan is clean, magnet all fresh and clean, new filter, silicone the gasket next and button it up. new trans fluid cooling lines too.
