Default Transmission problems and leaking

I just got a used engine put in my 1997 Dodge Ram 3500 and now I'm having transmission problems. Gear slippage and when I came to a stop or put it in reverse, it wouldn't go into gear right away. At first, the trans fluid was kind of low so I topped it off. Then I started having major trans fluid leakage. I figured I just overfilled it, but now I'm having more gear slippage, more leaking. Is the gear slippage due to the leaking/lack of pressure from the leaking or is this symptomatic of another problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe one of the tranny cooling lines is loose. That would explain the leaking and it would also lower the internal fluid pressure and cause slipping.

Thanks Alloro. You might be right. I found out that the leak was coming from a hose that may have been loose. I also may have overfilled the transmission with fluid which may have caused the leakage. I put a new heavier duty clamp on the hose which was leaking tranny fluid. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Have you checked and corrected the fluid level?
