Pour 3-1/2 quarts of Dextron auto tranny fluid down the tranny dipstick tube. Run the engine, shift through all of the gears (foot on brake), then go 10 miles down a highway, turn around and come back. (Bring the tranny fluid on the drive with you just in case you need it, but you shouldn't.) Leave the engine running and check the tranny fluid level. Add 1/2 pint (1/4 of a quart) at a time until the level is up to full.
That works for you because you're meticulous in your maintenance. But for some, that method could prove bad if the correct amount of fluid was not in the tranny to begin with. Also, if it's the first time someone is changing the fluid since owning the van, the same doubt could arise.
