Default How do I get a raised roof off a van in junk yard?

I see a ton of raised roof vans in the junk yard. I want to know how I get a raised roof off a junked van, do I just cut it with a saws-all or is there a rule of thumb to use, like maybe cut an inch from the plastic/fiberglass all the way around.

Any special registry/insurance thing you have to do?

There is a piece of trim just above the roof gutters. Remove this, and you will see a piece of aluminum running all the way around with screws every 4 inches or so.
Remove all the screws. There will be some foam rubber trim between the roof and metal. This will be stuck. Wedges, flat bars, putty knifes, screwdrivers. Once I had to use a car jack inside with an extension to keep pressure on it while I pried around the perimeter.

There will be a lot of wires. With out all the foo foo velor and insulation, it weighs about 200 lbs.

Bring friends, and 2x4's.

Take your wife (or girlfriend) and place her inside the van. Then tell her you're leaving her for a hot young good-looking chick.

I know that would raise the roof around here.

Thanks man, it will be nice to be able to stand up in my van.

Do I just make a cardboard layout when cutting my vans roof?

You only need 2 or 3 inches of the original roof to attach the nre roof to. When you remove one, it will be obvious.

When you remove the junk-yard roof take measurements, or even a picture of, the donor van and cut your van to match. Just the first thing that came to mind.
