Default Obsessive-compulsive preventative maintenace...?

Hi Folks,

Just joined and my first post. Great community of Dodge van folks. My story... I just purchsed a Sportsmobile Class B van conversion that was built on a 1995 Dodge 3500 van. It has 75,00 miles and was well maintained. I have read the horror stories of the fuel pump failing. It seems to happen right after folks fill their tanks.

I was going to buy a spare to keep in the van just in case. Then I thought I might just as well replace the pump so I can do it when the tank isn't full and its nice and sunny and warm outside. Knowing my luck I will be on some remote Forest Service road at night in snow when it fails.

Crazy idea?

Thanks!

Good idea on replacing the pump module. Most here highly recommend replacing it with a Dodge OEM unit. There have been many whom have tried aftermarket pumps and had them fail fairly soon to immediately after install. Now that was a few years ago.

I and a couple of others are running aftermarket pumps in our vans and so far we have not had any problems. Mine is about 8 months old now.

That said no matter which pump you use I personally recommend keeping the fuel tank over half full at all times. This helps keep the pump submerged in the fuel which acts like a coolant to the motor which can get quite warm while running.

Welcome SweetwaterJoe,

I have found this site very useful too. About your fuel pump. I am running a Delphi fuel pump from Napa and have had no problem after the OEM failed with 120k on her. I have had it in for 3 yrs with no problems. Good Luck and by the way these pumps aint cheap either...nice dent in the pocket book!

replacing the fuel pump is a pita---on my 89 "factoy" customized van the plywood on the floor was screwed into the plastic gas tank--did i say it was a PITA?
