Default Towing with the bumper

On my 1997 Ram 2500 it looks like the bumper is attached directly to the frame. The manual claims a max weight of 2000lbs for a trailer towed off the bumper. Perhaps I should just abide by the book but it doesn't seem you gain a lot going from bumper to tow hitch. That bumper looks pretty sturdy.

I checked it again and it just bolts on the body.. All they had to do was extend the frame a little.. Time to find a drop hitch.

Will a truck hitch fit on the van or will I need a van specific one?

I have a 94 ram van with a step bumper/hitch and it tows the boat just fine. It's a 17' fiberglass boat so it's not real lightweight either.

1997 was the last year of the lower tow ratings for the Ram Van. If you have a 3/5 class hitch put onto the frame, the towing would be around 5,800lbs. From 1998-2003 depending on the 5-lug or 8-lug wheels and suspension, the towing is 6,600lbs or 8,800lbs respectively.
