Bad tranny gone...new one in
Thank-you guys for your help with my tranny issues and getting a manual.
I finally was able to get my van back on the road. Just a couple minor issues tho. First of all it's my '93 B250 5.2 Bad Boy
(Drum Hauler, husbands a drummer) Anyway it's been sitting for at least 6 weeks. When I brought it home from the shop I noticed it has a bad case of lots of exhaust...regular exhaust color, not an over abundance that would suggest a blown head or gasket or something bad. Could it just be that the gas has gone bad in the tank? tank was 1/2 full when we parked it and it had a week old fuel pump.
Second...the shift into second on my "new" tranny is weird. It won't shift until 35-40 and then it almost double shifts...revs the engine really bad too. No tach...but you can hear it...Is it just because it was drained of fluid and maybe the bands either need adjusting or just have to give it a good run and get them lubricated up again? I have to wait a while before I have the $$ to dump a bottle of Lucas treatment in.
Other than that...it's just nice to have my baby back and able to move under it's own power...
And remember...NEVER use anything but ATF-4 in these bad vans...they are picky "eaters"

Well I figured out my smoke problem...Plus why my original tranny died...
I need to replace the tranny coolant lines. They're spewing fluid. And some of it apparently is hitting the hot exhaust system. That would also explain the "lag" in 2nd. If there is air getting into the lines along with a low fluid level...plus the simple pressure breach, I'm sure there just isn't the pressure build up to shift right. But when the tranny is full I can feel it shift...well more hear it in the engine. The shifting on this new thing is SMOOTH...
So now I have to stalk the u-pull-it yards again looking for the aluminum coolant lines. I called the one where I ended up finding my tranny. They have them for $20. But the 120 mile round trip drive is just too much...Plus I simply don't have the money.
