Default Have only 1st and reverse what happened??

I have a 2001 B2500 with the 5.2 engine, overdrive trans, and 3.91 rear gear. Van has about 84,000 miles on it. Have changed the oil religiously. Probably in the last 6 weeks had the oil changed and trans serviced, and adjusted. Van has towed a trailer only once in it's life, and that was with me driving. Thursday while driving to work, it started hesitating to upshift. Then coming home it would not upshift at all. If you continued to accelerate the engine would over run the trans and let you sorta free wheel. Once that happened one would have to slow back to almost a stop and then the trans would hook again and let you go to about 20mph before it "free wheeled. I only have what feels like 1st gear and reverse. Can anyone help??? Thanks

Is your check engine lamp on? If so what are the codes? Your solenoid pack on the transmission may have some trash in it and need either cleaned or replaced.

No check engine lights are on. Can I have codes without the check engine light illuminating? Thanks for your help.

Does the check lamp come on when you go to start the engine? If not then the bulb may be burned out. If it does temporally lights then it could still have a pending fault code that has not yet set the check engine lamp.

Run the key dance and watch your odometer. Do this but don't start the engine: Key on, key off, key on, key off, key on the read the odometer. If that does not work then try: Key on, key off, key on, key off, key on, key off, key on and read the odometer. It should show an example of P300 which is for Random Misfire. It may give you several codes so have paper and pen handy.

No lights of any kind any time. Guess I had better do some bulb checking. Thanks for the help, hang with me, cause I'm sorta slow on this electronic stuff. Also, I'll do the key thing and see what I get.

No lights on the dash what so ever especially with starting the engine? If not then check the fuses and bulbs. Is the odometer still working?

"doNe" I think means that in this case there are no codes. I am at a loss here but concerned that none of the other warning lamps lights up during the lamp check test. Sounds like to me that the PCM is not talking to the cluster but usually you get a "No Buss" on the odometer when that happens.

Oh, I screwed up I think. When I turn on the key I get the normal lights that illuminate until you start the vehicle. I thought you meant do I have any lights after the vehicle starts. All lights are normal before and after start. Sorry for the confusion.

Not sure exactly what is going on then. I would recommend taking out the trans solenoid and making sure the contacts are clean. Or might even replace it. It is located in the Power Distribution box under the hood near the battery.
