Unhappy 1992 B250 occassionally shifts into OD

I have a 1992 B250 Van. It has the electronic on/off switch for OD on the dash. I am experiencing issues with it shifting into OD. Sometimes it shifts and other times it does not causing lousy fuel economy. The majority of the time it does not shift into OD. Can anyone suggest some checks I can do for this? Thanks!

Do the Key dance to check for engine codes, see if there is a code 15, vehicle speed sensor.

I had issues with my VSS causing lack of overdrive, but mine is on the speedo cable, and I do not think you have a speedo cable.

Anyway there is a reed switch inside the VSS. It is like a mini pair of tweesers whose contacts are opened and closed by a spinning magnet. They wear out.

Rear axle, check the top of the pumpkin for an electrical connector. If there then disconnect the plug and unbolt the sensor. Pull/pry up on the sensor to remove it from the pumpkin of the axle.

You did not say whether you did the key dance and found any computer codes, but, the speed sensor location varies by year. Some years have 2. If not on the pumpkin, it is likely on the transmission.

On my '89 it is online on the speedo cable, under the brake booster.

good luuck

Thanks for the replies! I will be working on it over the holiday and update you as to what I find.

If I have to replace the VSS is this a dealer item or can I buy it at Autozone, etc?

Autozone would have had to of ordered my VSS.

Rockauto had it for several dollars cheaper including shipping.

A month later Amazon carried it even cheaper with free shipping.

Use rockauto to find the part numbers and then plug them directly into amazon under automotive.

I just got some Moog Idler arms from them for 40% less than rockauto.

If you plan on keeping this Van, get one of these:

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_...manual&_sacat=

They are very detailed and deal specifically with your year Van. Much much better than haynes or chilton

Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Okay...so the VSS in the trans corrected the problem. Thanks Landyacht for the photo it was a gigantic help.

One last question....How do you turn of the "Maintenance Required" light on the dash
