I subscribe to the opinion of "Don't buy the cheapest helmet you can find" 5000 lbs of steel over top of you and relying on a $30.00 jack = not a good idea. A good one from Northern Tool should be fine. DON'T buy one from Harbor Freight. I had one that nearly squashed me with my own GTO. Get the best one you can find in your price range its not worth your life.

The big point missed here is that you NEVER, EVER, EVER work on a vehicle, or get under one when it is supported only by a floor jack. Every jack manual and every safety standard out there emphasize this safety point. The jack is only for raising the vehicle so that jackstands can be put in place to hold the weight of the vehicle.

I love to use Amazon for these kinda things. The reviews will tell you loads....

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...rds=floor+jack

Many will post something if their jack failed. I too wouldnt go on the cheapest but I also put the floor jacks under as if the thing could come down at any second. Even the most expensive one I wouldn't trust ...

Personally I have a sears floor jack that looks like about 30 years old more or less. Super heavy duty never failed me but still I put in floor jacks in a way that if the car fell I wouldnt be hurt...

I have had 2 walmart floor jacks and have used several HD floor jacks. Currently using a mid size from Harbor Frieght. The ones I have bought have done well for the time I have owned them. Even though I sold the walmart units, 1 after owning it 12 years and the other after 9 years, they were in great working shape. The Harbor Freight unit is a quick lift Aluminum frame unit. I use it every week for the last year and half. I like the lite weight of it and its lifting height.

I have had a HD 2.5 ton unit fail as described above while it was only lifting about 800 pounds.

And I can't stress enough to always use jack stands when working under the vehicle.
