Default 1999 Ram 1500 Van 3.9 v 6 Gas gauge malfunction

I am having a intermittent gas gauge malfunction, replaced in tank pump but still happening it will drop to empty, if I turn the engine of and restart ounce or twice this will some times fix it for a time.

any ideas?

Thanks

Since turning the key on and off will affect the gauge, then your problem is likely with the gauge itself. You could try finding an instrument cluster and swapping it out.

1. First try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, then reconnect it. Perhaps the PCM is looking for the old cluster.

2. Double check to make sure all of the cluster connectors are in good.

3. It could be a bum cluster.

I changed gauge cluster gas gauge still not working, filled tank and gauge went from 1/4 to E with the light it seems to be going backward

Had the same problem last year thought it was the pump so I changed it.

but that was not it.

any thoughts about were to go from here ?
