Default Water pump question

I have a 2001/1500/123k/5.9 and I think the water pump is going. With all the other engine noise not really sure so the question is how do I determine that it is the water pump. If I took it in to someone like PEP boys how do they ID it. Read all the water pump threads but they are more about the physical replacement.
Thanks in advance for all responses.
Jim

Water pumps usually fail when the bearings go. Grab the fan blade and see if you can rock it back and forth.

There is a weep hole on the bottom of the pump. If it is weeping, time to replace it.

Impellers can erode or fall off the shaft.

The water pump body can be eaten away within by cavitation in combination with a bunch of grit circulating in the cooling system.

Very difficult to safely get an automotive stethoscope on the pump with engine running, but you can get it on the power steering and air pump and alternator and a/c compressor/ timing chain cover to see if that is where the noise is emanating from.

A length of hose held to the suspect part and your ear can work too, but the above product is a couple magnitudes better.

Take the belt off and start the engine briefly to see if the noise goes away, then turn it back off. If the noise did not go away, then the noise has nothing to do with anything the belt touches. If the noise did go away, one at a time spin each pulley to see if any of them have a rough feel to their rotation. With the belt off is also the best time to try and wiggle the fan blades as landyacht318 suggested since there won't be any pressure on it.

If you do end up getting a water pump, get the NEW Bosch pump from Pep Boys. It doesn't cost any more than the other guys' pumps, but it doesn't come with the high rate of failure like the other guys' pumps. GMB pumps are the worst.

Always check your fan clutch for play after changing the pump, and the fan disk for straightness. Problems with wobbliness in that area frequently lead to water pump bearing failure.
