so i've been hearing this whine come from the back end. checked the fluid after a recent change and it was black. I just changed all the bearings for the diff (front and rear pinion, side ones on diff and outter rear bearings including all the races) and I still get the same whine. Any thoughts i'm so frustrated took me all day to changed out.

i did not change the collapsable spacer and used the original one hoping the backlash is ok, hopefully its not that? maybe gears?

whine is prevalent on load & sometimes at low speed coast(40km). tyipcally over 60km its loud up too 100, then its quiet at 100km and 100+ its loud again.

 

Whenever that happens to me I turn around and tell the wife the shut up.


Okay, time to disassemble the rear end again. You'll need to change the collapsible spacer, connect a holding tool to the pinion flange, and then torque the nut down to proper specs. with the new spacer in place.

 

Sounds like the backlash is not set properly, or the ring and pinion gears are worn beyond servicability due to poor lubrication.

Could also be your rear wheel bearings. Not sure why you would rebuild your entire rear end, pull the axles, and not change the rear wheel bearings and oil seals.

Alloro is 100% correct about the crush sleeve - you always need a new one after a differential rebuild. He's also 100% correct about the wife.

 

My 8 3/8 was whining, and in the process of swapping it out with a 9.25, I found the rear U joint, which was not old, was toast as well.

Hard to pinpoint where noises come from in a Van.

 

everything was changed including wheel bearings only collapsable spacer was not. had it checked again the spider gears and pinion gear is too worn down. need practically a new diff. previous owner didn't do regular diff flushes are there aftermarket diffs or should i just replace the pinion shaft and spider gears and set the backlash correctly?

 

He was correct not to do them. According to the owner's manual, the differential fluid is synthetic and is good for the life of the van. Changing it is not part of recommended maintenance.

 

If My owners manual said that, I'd ignore it.

well can't argue with that wording.

My owner's manual says to change the oil filter every other oil change. I ignore that too, even though I'm sure most filters could last that long unless something was wrong with the engine or filter.

 

If you change your oil every 3K-4K it is perfectly fine to change the filter every other time, especially if you are using the Purolator L3001 which has roughly double the filter element material of the OEM filter.

 

Since you already did all that bearing work I'd say to just get a new gear set. Do yourself a favor and also get a paper gasket for the diff cover (coat both sides of the paper gasket with a thin layer of RTV) and use a good diff lubricant like Royal Purple when you bolt everything back together.

 

Of course you would, because you know better than all of those engineers that did the designing and testing.
