Whats the spindle nut torque spec?

Default Whats the spindle nut torque spec?

running a ram 3500 maxivan with the 4000 lb front axle what would be the torque spec for the spindle nut?

im replacing the front brakes and bearings at the same time and any torque specs for this job would be really helpful.

anyone who has done this job before have any helpful hints and pitfalls to avoid?

thank you guys so much im working on the van 200 miles from home so if it doesnt go well im stranded far from home.

I could not find this spec anywhere so I wrote Timken since I only use their bearings, the following is the response I received. My Van is a 1994 B150


Your application calls for taper single row bearings inner and outer.
The bearing races must be pressed into the housing fully and square.
The standard setting requires you to fully seat the rollers to the high point of the inner (cone) races, by tightening the spindle nut while rotating the hub, until they start to bind, and it starts to have slight resistance when you rotate the wheel. At this point the rollers have been aligned with the outer rib, and there is zero clearance between all the bearing components. This is not the setting you want, because there is not enough clearance between the components for a film of grease. Back off ½ to 1 full turn, and retighten again, until it starts to bind slightly. The final setting would then back off the nut a quarter turn to the nearest castle nut hole alignment, and insert the new cotter pin.
Now for the technical adjustment by foot pounds, with a resultant mounted end play of .001 to .007 inches.

7 Bearing adjustment
Use a torque
wrench to tighten
the adjusting
nut to 50 ft. lbs.
while turning
the rotor. Back
off the adjusting nut 1 full turn. Then
re-torque the nut to 10 ft. lbs. while turning
the rotor. Next, back off the adjusting
nut ¼ turn. Lock the nut with a new
cotter pin.
8 Check bearing adjustment
Use a dial indicator
to measure
end play. Mount
the indicator
base as close to
the center of the hub/rotor as possible.
With the indicator tip against the end
of the spindle, set the indicator at zero.
Grasp the rotor at three o’clock and nine
o’clock. Push the rotor in while oscillating
and read the dial indicator. Then
pull the rotor out while oscillating and
read the dial indicator again. The bearing
end-play is equal to the total indicator
movement, which should be between
0.001” and 0.007”. If not, repeat steps
7 and 8. Reinstall all components as the
vehicle manufacturer recommends
