Default Dodge Ram Van Tranny Problems

Anybody have any ideas on what went wrong with my trans? 1994 Ram 250 van 5.2 Liter 8 cyl.

Trans suddenly started slipping, something went "pop" then slipped altogether.
All Lines are intact but trans fluid is leaking like crazy from around my bell housing.

Unless you cracked the trans case, I'd say Front Transmission Pump... The pump may have gone altogether, but could be just a seal cracked too...

Would that account forthe loud "whirring noise" when the truck isput into Park? I had to fill it with fluid to get it into my driveway. Luckily I was only about two blocks away when it gave up!

If it's 'whirring' like that, it sounds like the front trans pump is shot completely. I'm not sure if you know what a job the front trans pump is, but the entire trans needs to come out to fix the it...

...another possiblity is the Torque Convertor. If something broke loose inside that could make the noise... and of course, that can leak trans fluid too.

Depending on which scenario it is, both are expensive jobs at the dealership... and then again, not something a novice mechanic should handle.

Is the van in good condition...? I mean, will you be fixing this? Is the van doing ANYTHING else weird?

Thanks for the help with this. The Van is a custom Sherod Mark 5 and in real nice condition, no rust, relatively well taken care of and low miles for a 94. (136K) Have kept it up well with regular routine maintaince. Probably will yank the trans my self and find a good used 4 speed rather than try to rebuild the existing trans. Although have done a rebuild on an GM R700 before.
