no fire
I have a dodge ram van v6. Trouble started when it quit on me goin down the road. Towed it home. Wasn't gettin fire. Replaced crank sensor. That wasn't it. Replaced coil, rotar button & dist. cap. Did alright 4 a week. Then would turn over but not start. Tried ether. Didn't work. Replaced pickup coil. Did alright 4 another week. Then wouldn't start again. Replaced ecu. No start still. Switched the auto shutdown relay. Started but after i cut it off wouldn't start back. Figured out sometimes i'm getting fire from the coil sometimes not. Tried another coil. Same thing. Hot wired the coil. Samething. PLEASE HELP!! Out of ideas. Is there a resistor for the ignition?
You don't mention which year/model but bad grounds are an extremely common issue. Check/clean your coil ground point, check and clean (or replace) all battery grounds/wiring and replace negative battery terminal if it looks anything less than perfect.
Several of us have added an additional 8AWG (or better) ground wire run from the battery terminal directly to a bolt on the radiator core support or fender. My 2000 suddenly quit running while driving down the highway twice and a few times it claimed my alternator was not charging. I also had intermittent issues with power windows and other accessories. After adding a secondary ground direct to the body two years ago all electrical issues disappeared and its been working great ever since.
If grounds are perfect and you are actually burning up coils I'd suspect bad plugs, bad wires or incorrect spark gap. If you replaced the rotor and cap, be sure to use only the high quality brass versions. The cheap aluminum version will not work on this engine.
