Default Need help with seat belt replacement

Hello,

I have a 96 b2500 5.9 360. The drivers side seatbelt needs to be replaced. Charge was blown during a tire blow out by previous owner. The seatbelt does not retract and it seems as though the previous owner severed the cables to stop the airbag warning.

I have seen these seat belt repair services on ebay. Basically you send in your seatbelt and they repair and replace the charge and you reinstall. I plan on having a professional reinstall it.

I'm writing to ask the forum's thoughts on these repair services. Should I go this route or pay $1K plus to have the dealership fix the seatbelt? On the other hand should I just get a universal 3 point seatbelt from ebay?

Thanks in advance for your help. I definitely do not want to make a stupid decision with my safety, especially because I am planning a cross country west coast road trip.

there are a lot of junkyards that have your seatbelt and for 50 bucks or less. Also, if the previous owner cut the passive restraint plug, the light would be on all the time. Evidently, it was wired closed, so I wouldn't try to fix that - only the belt.

All you need to fix the seatbelt is a t40 torx bit with a 3/8th drive. It is a easy job.

Also I don't know if a universal would work as the belt itself is really long. I would check that before ordering.

Thanks so much.

Does the explosive charge in the seatbelt need to be wired up somehow to work, or does it just operate on its own? I'm kind of confused about that part.

yes it does need the wiring for the charge to work...the locking part is non-electrical. If you post some pictures, maybe we can get it back to stock
