New guy here...Hey I got here by looking for reasons why this van I bought will not shift from 1st to second gear. the fluid was all but gone so I refilled it but no shift. when I originally got it it did shift, but leaked fluid fixed leaks no shift. It will go into reverse fine and into 1st fine but to go to second it winds up and up and I do not want to tear it up. I have a replacement 727 if need be. I did pull the pan and a lot of crud was present, I also pulled the valve body and am getting ready to check and clean it before reinstalling and see if it was just crud. what else should I be looking for?

update I cleaned and reinstalled valve body checked fluid and all still no shift into 3rd it does shift into second either that or it is starting out in second because when I downshift it goes from second to first. I just can not get 3rd? really stuck here.
