drive shaft slip yoke splines-- grease or trans fluid?
Just wondering what to do with the slip joint splines---
I see on the net, that ford has a problem with needing to grease there splines..
Well does my 97 dodge b2500 need grease or trans lube on the splines that slip into the transfer case??????
Man this has been expensive and frustrating...Here's what I've done...:
Pulled off the drive shaft..pressed out universal joints and replaced them using a rented tool that was made for ball joints..it was a bitch to use cause the caps kept caughting and the sockets I was using kept slipping..what a hassle..
Got it all done ONLY to find the caps at the pinion shaft did not fit..they were 1.4 mm to big.
So off to the dealer, no help...then Napa,,the guy with 20 years experience there could not find the right part..after 20min. of measuring and looking through big books...
So I had to take my problems to a drive shaft service 45miles away...$40.oo and all day later..I have a new universal joint pressed into the shaft at the pinion shaft end...
NOw I am going to go take the drive shaft out of my car, and see if it fits...
What I will do is lightly grease the chrome slider and splines that go into the transfer case.
Just wondering that should only get transmission fluid on them???

I would only put transmission fluid on anything going inside the transmission. The seal on the back is to keep fluid in, when you drive fluid should be getting to the slip yoke to keep it lubricated. Putting anything on them will just end up in your transmission and possibly gunk it up.
Thanks for the reply New van man...
I was unsure of how the back of the trans got lube. So I put on a sparing small amount of grease into the splines (inside)..with a long brush..and the outside smooth part.
I hope it doesn't gunk it Up....maybe it will be alright...Now I want to understand how the rear part of the trans gets fluid...I thought it was called the transfer case...and had it's own fluid...

Transfer cases are on 4wd rigs, they act as the differential between front and rear axles.
That rear part is the overdrive according to my manual.
There's a pump in the transmission, that is what feeds fluids where they need to go. There are gaskets that seal the holes, and the pump is engineered to be powerful enough to transport fluid accordingly through said holes.

Ok,,,well the Overdrive case...I just pulled off the trans pan and replaced the compressor spring with an upgraded one...the old one was just fine.....I was hoping it was broken, so I'd be making a difference...oh well...after spilling trans fluid all over me and my driveway...again....
I'm working this van one problem at time....Someday it'll be perfect....I can't really see that far yet..so I'm just taking it a day at a time.
