Default Best way to empty fuel tank.

1988 Dodge B250 Van . I need to empty my tank in order to remove it . If I turn the key to on , will the fuel pump start sending gas to the engine so I can disconnect the line and fill up a jerrycan ? Or any other idea to emty it . Thanks .

Most pump assembles have a siphon port on them. You can disconnect the fuel line and use the pump to get it out also.

If the engine doesn't start, the power to the fuel pump drops out after 2-seconds. Disconnecting the fuel line and routing it into a storage container, followed by applying constant power to the fuel pump at the fuel pump relay is the best option. Second best option is to remove the filler hose from the tank and pump it out from there with an external pump. You have to do it at the tank because you might not get a hose down through the fuel door port because of anti-siphon mechanisms installed.

If its full and like mine, all you need to do is drive it a few miles. I guess you could remove the fill cap pipe and siphon it out.

If you can get a hose all the way into the tank through the fill tube, use an air compressor and several fuel cans. Put some rags around the hose with just enough room to shove an air nozzle into the filler tube. If you have enough cans, it will siphon nearly all the fuel out. However, it's often difficult to get the hose all the way in.

On the other hand, I've worked on vehicles where the pump filed right after filling and there was an anti-siphon feature in the filler. One I had to raise a jack under the tank with plywood to keep from poking a hole in the tank. Lower the jack and disconnect the filler tube. Get the fuel lines and wires unhooked and drop the jack as low as possible and let the tank slide off with the filler connection on the high side.
