I need to replace the engine mounts on my 2001 dodge ram 3500 van.
Anyone know of a guide? I saw a tech manual page, looks like i remove a bracket above (3 bolts) and bolts above and below the mount then jack it up.
1. Where/how do i safely jack up the engine. I dont have a hoist support they say use. I saw a 97 van on youtube and he used a 4x4..
2. Do i need to disconnect or loosen the mount on the other side too while doing this, or will the engine tilt a bit?
You don't have to remove the bracket and 3 bolts unless you can't crack the top motor mount nut loose. That being said, I removed the lower nuts from the mounts, removed the doghouse and air filter assembly; doing this allows the engine to lift higher. I then put a board across the bottom of the oil pan and jacked the engine up. Then at a couple of locations, I inserted blocks of wood between the engine block and the frame (watch out for brake lines), then lowered the engine onto the wood blocks. The engine has to be high enough, so the lower motor mount threaded studs clear the frame. To get the lower motor mount nuts off, I used a socket with a universal and slid it between the lower frame and steering linkage. Turning the wheels to move the linkage around can help with getting the socket up in there. It is a tight fit but doable. I've attached an image where the red arrows show pretty much how to approach the lower motor mount nuts. Once the engine is safely down on the wood blocks, you can remove either the upper motor mount nut, or the 3 bolts, whichever works for you.
Tip: On the motor mount next to the threaded stud is a bump that allows the mount to fit only one correct way, so pay attention to how they are positioned when you remove the mounts. Oh and, penetrating oil is your best friend here.
