Same deal here.
My van wouldn't start the other day, turned over but just wouldn't fire.
I drained the battery in the process. I boosted it the next morning and it fired right up.
I noticed later that the battery wasn't charging. I turned the van off and sure enough, not even enough juice to turn it over.
I had PartsSource dyno the alt, which failed (although i suspect they scammed me), so i put in a new alt.
The van runs fine with the battery disconected.
The battery meter on the dash is about 1/4 way to the middle.
Nothing doing, won't charge.
The guy who sold it to me about a year ago, told me his mechanic had bypassed the computers voltage regulator and put in an external, but i can't find it.
Any ideas? I'm goona be stranded at work today if I don't figure this out.

Rather than trying to find the one in question, it's much easier to just test it. Disconnect the negative battery cable, disconnect the red wire from the alternator, make sure that red wire isn't hitting any metal and reconnect the negative cable. Test this red wire to see if you have 12 volts to ground. If you do the fusible link is good, if it's dead then the fusible link is blown.
Pull the negative cable and reconnect the red wire to the alternator when you're done testing.

That is a great tip for checking the links.
The fusable links are tucked up behind the brake master cylindar booster. They are a real PITA to get out. If that is bad, you need to pull them out carefully with the battery disconnected replacement fusable links can be purchased and you just have to wire them in. They are a much smaller gauge wire than the insulation would have you believe.
