Default keeping engine still while removing balancer

hey guys.... its my first post, i cracked the head in my van last fall and am just getting around to putting in my refurbished heads... got all the parts and figured since im at about 120000 id change out the timing chain to a double chain unit.... i dont have a impact wrench or power to my garage and im having probs getting the balancer off (engine just spins) and its sposed to be torqued down to 130lbs... prolly hasnt moved since original assembly my buddy suggested struffing a length of nylon rope into one of the cylinders and bolting a head on temporarily... id hate to do this and crack a piston or foul my bearings... any suggestions? comments?

thanks
mike
