WAYBACK PLAYBACK: 1980 B200 GAS TANK ISSUE....HEEELP
Ladies and Gentlemen:
(pause)
First, I'd like to thank you for having me. This is my first post....(of many, I'm sure) I have just purchased my first Dodge! She's a real beaut! A 1980 B200, with a towpackage! .......that seems to be welded to the frame; preventing me from dropping the tank to find out why it is leaking from the top. This is no small leak, let me tell you! If a drove over a lit cigarette, carelessly tossed by a fellow motorist, why, KABLAMMO! So, I have a few questions, please.
Was the tow package a factory item? The one on it completely blocks the tank from going anywhere but forward. Is there a way to get what appears to a be a 30+gal tank out without taking the rear axle off? Actually, It seems there is another thin piece welded on the front side that will keep it from coming forward too. I'm thinking about going through the floorboard. If that sounds more reasonable, any idea where the pump is located so I can keep future ankle sprains at a minimum? And how should I cut out a square without that whole KABLAMMO thing? ANY help........greatly appreciated.

I've not seen a hitch reciever welded to the frame, from the factory, on any Dodge full size van. Sounds, to me, that a previous owner had an "idea", and you're now having to deal with it.
Is the tank Metal, or plastic? As I recall, the metal tanks (standard) were 22 gallons, and the plastic tanks (optional) were plastic, and had a 35 gallon capacity. The larger tanks were also visible from the rear of the van below the bumper.

Im willing to bet that your rubber filler neck hose is shot & that is producing your leak.........time to cut that home made hitch assy off huh??
do you just smell gas, or do you see moisture?
The Fill tube tube is a common failure point. You can replace the fill tube and the connecting hose without dropping the tank. Are you sure the leak is in the tank area and not the lines along the underside of the frame? I would check those before the tank myself. If its the fill tube vent, the tank itself, or the lines coming out of the tank itself, then you have to drop the tank. The mechanical pump is on the side of the engine. Due to repeated failures I replaced mine with an electric, and left the old one in place to plug the hole.
