1984 b150 318- rough idle, point gap?
Just bought an 84 dodge camper with 73000 kms (cdn van) engine runs smoothly no noise as soon as its warm, but it idles a little high in park and neutral, then really rough (sort of chugging and wanting to stall) in the drive gears and reverse. Also if i gas it quickly it stalls. This seems to me like maybe air filter? so i plan to change it and spray some carb cleaner in the carb, as well as change oil (it has been sitting for over a year) also was thinking of changing the plugs i pulled one and it was pretty black. does anyone know what the point gap is for my engine? also it mentioned in the carb cleaner instructions that i may have to adjust idle. is this done through an idle screw near the carbs somehwere or by adjusting the throttle linkage next to the air box? cheers and thanks for any help
You didn't mention if this is the V6, the 318/v8 or the 360/v8. Though it might be the same for both V8's. The point gap for both of my 318's has been .035. The black color may be because it is burning oil, or is running rich. That would explain the stall at sudden accelleration, to much gas to air. though you can test that by driving withthe aircleaner cover off, that will elimiate lack of air problems, but not too much gas. The idle set screw on the 318 is on the drivers side of the carb. I tend to leave my idle set high since it gets me heat faster in the winter.
