1996 Van - Transmission Fluid Change Confusion HELP!
I want to get my transmission oil changed on my 1996 Pleaseureway RV on a 96 Dodge Van chasis. Talked to several places they use what ever they have, throw in an additive, and say its the equivalent but Chrysler Bullitens say to only use their ATF TYPE 7178 (atf 3?) fluid except in emergency Dexron II. Hate to take it to dealer cause its loaded with my stuff that will walk away.
Anyone know of a competant trans oil change place in SAN ANTONIO TX that will use the correct fluid, besides the Dodge dealer?????
Thanks in advance
ROB

welcome to DF... any trans shop should be able to have the atf-3... i'd recommend going to the atf-4 though, it's a better fluid as it's part if not 100% synthetic.
NEVER and I totally repeat NEVER use Dextron II ATF in a Ram truck/Van tranny unless you want to rebuild it really soon.
Steve mentioned the correct stuff to use, ATF+3. You can always add LubeGard to ATF+3 since you haul extra weight all the time as an RV. The LubeGard is known widely in the RV circles to work really well with ATF+3. BUT, if you choose ATF+4 and can get it, then the LubeGard isn't needed since AFT+4 is 100% synthetic.
You can do a bunch of searches on RV.net forums for AFT+3 and ATF+4 dealing with towing and Chrysler trucks/vans.
I run ATF+3 and LubeGard. LubeGard protects the ATF+3 flash point temp.

I got LubeGard at Wal*Mart and it's sold at AutoZone, Napa, Pepboys and other places too. Camping World charges way to much for the stuff.
Again, if you get ATF+4, then there isn't a need for LubeGard.
Autozone, Napa, and some Wal*Mart stores sell ATF+3. It's rare to find ATF+4, but DCX has released it to the general retail chains to carry it now since this summer.
