I bought a used 2000 B1500 Ram Van Conversion back in May of this year. It now has close to 50,000, so I know it is due for a tuneup (and I haven't done one personally, yet). A week ago my check engine light came on. I used the key trick to get the codes out and only got one - P0505. Oddly enough, the van seems to be running fine to me, but it could be that I am not feeling the problems yet.

May I assume that cleaning the IAC per these instructions:

and disconnecting the battery to reset the light, will remove the code for me? Is there anything else I need to know? (Yes, I am a lady, but don't let that fool you. I have playing with cars since I was a girl, a very, very long time ago.)

 

welcome to DF... generally that code means your IAC is dead. what you can do is pull the neg battery term and reset the pcm to clear the code. if it comes back your IAC is having a problem that a cleaning wont fix. one you put the battery term back on and turn the key on, the IAC will go full extended, then pull back some IIRC and the pcm will determine it's good. yours may not be doing it all the way that the pcm expects. they are about $65 bux at napa.

Does the IAC normally just go kaput without any indications of problems (no rough idle or performance problems)? I am a little concerned that I will be changing a part that may not necessarily be bad (since I see no performance indication of it) and not finding a part that actually is bad. Lastly, can I reset the PCM by just pulling the negative battery cable, or do I need to have it reset with some type of special equipment?

By the way, I am on the west coast and Napa has an IAC listed for $46, Autozone for $45, and Checkers/Kragen have one listed for $43. I have to do a tuneup on the vehicle anyway, so I will pull it and look it over.

 

great! they price went down... 6 months ago it was $65 at our local napa. had to swap one out on the wifes dakota.

 

'My Bad'. I forgot to tell you that the engine light has been coming on and off, mostly on. I am going to try to clean it first, do the tune-up, and see what happens. I'll come back here and post the results, one way of the other, so that others have a reference.

Changed the spark plugs and air filter (never changed - see other postings here). Oddly enough, the IAC was almost as clean as a brand new one and so was the chamber it sits in. I cleaned what little carbon there was on it out and put it back in. Went 2 days, no engine light. Now I have it again.

Does anyone have suggestions on what to look at now?

i am still trying to find the IAC on my 01 dodge ram 1500, can't find a diagram online & so here are the 3 parts i think it might be plus a pic of my truck, can someone verify which part is which? thanks
