Default Ball joints

I was just hit with having to replace the upper and lower ball joints on a 2006 2500 with 48,000 miles. Anybody have a cost for this, and whether this is normal range of service?

Apparently that is a thousand-dollar job. Damn the dealerships! Maybe I was driving it a lil' hard, but I thought ball joints would be good into the 100k range.

the OEM ball joints do seem to be a bit 'soft'. I know MOOG makes a replacement that is greasable, you might want to check into it.
