Hey guys, What is the best batteries? I live in michigan so its cold winters so what batteries to you guys reccommend? Iv always had good luck with A/C Delco.

 

optima batteries have pretty good cca's.

 

This is most likely the only area of expertise I have. I worked for Johnson Controls battery division which makes Interstate, Sears, Autozone, Walmart along with many more for seven years.

Two things will kill a lead acid battery, a true frozen battery (destroys the crystals on the plates within each cell, and heat.

I'll give general advice for anyone.

If you live in a area where heat tends to be more of a issue most of the year, you want a battery with fewer plates per cell thus reducing internal battery heat.

If you live in a area where cold tend to be more of a issue most of the year, you want a battery with the the most plates per cell.


So in a hot area a 650 CCA battery will do well. In a cold area a 900 plus CCA battery will do well.

Another cold tip is if possible keep the battery from sitting all night or day in subzero temps. i.e remove it on a as needed basis or park in garage with engine blanket, Oil or radiator fluid heaters will not help your battery directly.

Some will tell you about plate design to create a greater surface area for more paste which would mean more crystals per plate. This is correct but I'd rather have a battery will more plates than "new designed plates".
