Default 2001 Ram 1500 cold Weather

Hi there, I am new to the dodge world, I have a 2001 dodge ram laramie 1500, I have only owned it for a week. This week it has been extremly cold here in Calgary, Alberta almost -33 Degrees C, with the windchill almost -50C. Since it has turned cold my truck will not upshift, and will run at like 3500 plus rpm's when I am travelling at 100km, it seemslike there should be another gear or 2.A couple of days ago when it was just above 0degrees C, the truck was running at2000 rpms or less at 100km per hour. Ne one having this happen to them, is it normal?

Are you letting the Engine warm to proper temp? Usually you'll have to drive a bit before everything warms up.

I don't really think its a problem honestly. Mine did the same thing when it was 0 to -20 F. I noticed that the converter wouldn't lock up until the trans got warm. I think its just a thing that keeps the trans speed up to increase engine temp and trans temp in cold weather. If you have your cruise set and don't feather the gas after a period of time then it will never lock up. So for the first little bit I don't use cruise.

I had the exact same problem last Tuesday in Appleton WI where the temperature dropped below -17F.

As soon as the truck warmed up, my 2001 V8 5.9L 1500 Ram STL quad cab - ran just like nothing happened.

I contact a friend at the factory and was told that the tranny fluid was too cold and this causes this problem.

Nice to see another Canadian on the forum! Congrats on your new truck. Mine is in storage for this winter (just pruchased it as well) until I can get some snow tires. Good to know/hear of this issue though. Will the engine come up to temp just idyling or does it require actually driving?

What you're experiencing is normal. The computer wont let the trans shift into overdrive until the trans has reached a certain temp.
