De-chroming wheels

De-chroming wheels
I have been dechroming the truck since day one. I like chrome on the harley but not the 4X4. I have read that the wheels are "clad" and it looks like they are just chromed plates mounted. I am in the military and gone all the time and dont have the time to checkout the techs at the dealership. I have noticed that the weights are mounted in a way that if they do come off, I will have to rebalance(easily done). I am planning on taking this gas-hog off road and dont want to mess up alloys. so I am looking for the cheap way of dechroming.

Yes. I have spoken with the dealership many times about these wheels. They are simply chrome covers that come off and this was designed
to be replaced at a lower cost without replacing the entire rim. So, take those weights off...and take the main hub off with the bolts...and then off comes the chrome cover

Thanks for the info. Thats what I thought. Never had the time to look. I guess I know what I will be doing tommorrow. Thanks goodness that the base has a "hobby shop" to do this. The 11" of snow here has been fun to play in, but stinks to work in.[8D]

Iwould like to know this....if you took the chrome plate off the rim...which it pops right off, does it THEN look
like the spare rim under the truck?
like the spare rim under the truck?

RE: De-chroming wheels
I just went to the base hobby shop and did a oil change and tire rotation. Underneath is a steel rim. It looks just like the chrome but black. Looks like there is part of the chrome plate is rolled over the outer edge of the rim. And must be double-sided taped on also. Looks like I will probably ruin the chrome clad plates taking them off. Have to wait til summer when I have more time to investagate.
