Default Where the rubber meets the road

I'm reading about Hemi's wooping up on other pretenders, but I'm having a problem which thus far has kept me from enter the world of amateur truck racing. I spin my tires...a lot!!! I try to use less throttle, but still chirp the tires without much effort. I would really hate to race someone on half throttle. I have a 04 Hemi regular cab 4x4 with the off-road group. I'm assuming my tires are the culprit. They are 275/70R17 Goodyear Wrangler A/S which will make good winter tires when I decide to get some new wheels. Although the 275mm corresponds to 11" of width, only 8" of highly spaced rubber actually hits the road.

Can someone with the 20" wheels tell me if the have have tire spin issues and how wide is the tire tread width. Also, by looking at your 20", do you think an inch wider tire would fit within the wheel well? I'm thinking about Nitto404 tires measuring 305/50R20 which should be a close match in height of my OEM tires (31.9" vs. 32.4") The 325/45/R22 (32.6") is actually a better match in diameter, but they are pretty pricey. Also does anyone have any 50 or lower series tires on their truck? I would like to know if the ride is tolerable on the Ram. I already have 50 series tires on my car, so I'm not a stranger to low profile tires, but the car's suspension is tuned for those tires where the truck isn't.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I would find out if you have the 3.92 gear. If so, its no wonder your spinning with 17's on there. Also I have found if you drive above 45 most of the time, deflate your tires to around 28. This will give you more tread to the road and double your tire life. This will also help from squealing the tires.

I do have the 3.92 ratio axle, but my tires are only 1/2" smaller in outer diameter. I haven't check my pressure, so I'll take a look at that. Anyone interested in putting a measuring tape across their 20's to see how much rubber hits the road? Also, is anyone spinning their 20's or is lawntycoon's good grip more typical than he believes?

i've got the 20's and i can spin the tires. its not as effortless as your problem, if i am at a stop and i just slam on the gas and hold it there, the tires spin as i start to drive forward (or backwards) for a few seconds before it grips. otherwise, if i dont go all the way to the floor, the tires wont spin.
