Default How a HEMI really works

I posted this link in another thread but thought I would provide it's own topic also. For those of you that have always wondered and never knew, click on this link to find out about the HEMI. Pretty cool info, just keep clicking "next page" as you make it to the bottom.

Good site, just one problem. They claim that a HEMI cannot have 4 valves per cylinder. This completely false. It was done by Chrysler. Take a look (toward the bottom of the page). http://www.allpar.com/mopar/hemi/hemi.html Thanks for sharing site, though.

One thing that a hemispherical head will never have is four valves per cylinder. The valve angles would be so crazy that the head would be nearly impossible to design. Having only two valves per cylinder is not an issue in drag racing or NASCAR because racing engines are limited to two valves per cylinder in these categories. But on the street, four slightly smaller valves let an engine breathe easier than two large valves. Modern engines use a pentroof design to accommodate four valves.
You're right Intrepid. What they should have said was that 4 valves per cylinder would never work on a "true hemishpherical head". It was created in "draft-form" but was too expensive to produce. Chrysler also drew up a "Pent-Roof Hemispherical head" that made it possible for 4 valves but it completely changed the design of the combustion chamber compared to the real hemi head and never made it to the assembly line. It appears that the 4 valve per cylinder was more of a dream than reality.

Thanks for the link.
