Default Four Wheel Drive Engage Problem

Hey everyone. I have a question about my vacuum shift motor, that maybe one of you guys could answer. I recently bought my ram as is with a 4x4 intermittent problem. I found the problem to be with the vacuum shift motor not fully engaging, and causing a gear grinding noise when attempting. I can see that the vacuum lines off the transfer case were messed with possibly in an attempt to fix the problem. I will be replacing the shift motor soon, but my problem is the placing of the vacuum lines. There are two lines coming off the shift motor, one red and one black; which is engage and which is disengage? Also, of the four lines going into the transfer case, which are the engage and disengage lines? If anyone has an idea and could help me out, that'd be great. thanks guys

I just checked in my Haynes manual, and unfortunately, it didn't offer much information other than how to remove it. My best advice is to just label the lines as you take them off so you can remember where to put them when you're done. You could try giving the dealership a call, and see if they can set you up with a vacuum diagram... but from what I've heard about Dodge dealers, they generally aren't that helpful. Good luck!

I dont know which one is which, but I have replaced the entire vacuum harness to make my 4x4 work again.

Another option that may be of interest to you is a manual engagement system: http://www.pavementsucks.com/tech/posilock.php

RATCHET, i did as you said, and i drove by the dealership for a vacuum diagram. you were right they werent very helpful....because they were closed, but i did manage to find an identical setup on their used lot. I crawled under and matched my wires to those on the lot.

BILL, ive already vacuum checked all of my lines, so i can rule that out. The manual engage you mentioned didnt have a price on it. I found it through JCWhitney for about $200. More than i want to dish out now until im sure thats the problem.

In my looking, i did find a good sight for troubleshooting this problem and others. You guys have probably heard of it
