engine woes!!!!!!!!!!
i just purchased a 95 2500 4x4 5.9ltr.ram the truck. is in great shape except for the engine.
ITS IN THE BED!!!!!!!!!!.torn down.LOL
any way i would like to pick up a crate engine for it but funds are low rite now.
i have a 5.2 in a 92 dodge van that i would like to use in the mean time how difficult is the swap??
and i also have a 86 van with a 360 that i could use but people have been telling me that it will not work.
can some one tell me the difference between the magnum motors and the older mopar motors? are they cast different? the 5.2 in the 92 has the same injection system set up as the newer motors.
the 5.9 in the 86 is carbed.
thanks in advance.

The 5.2L should be an easy install. As for the 360 in the '86, I dunno. You'll have to check motor mounts and all to make sure things will bolt in without hitting or rubbing something. Aftermarket motor mounts should be available to make it fit. You will most likely have to use the tranny that came with the truck unless you have one or can find one that will work. Check the bolt pattern on the older 360 to see if the tranny bellhousing will match. Transmission mounts should be easy to get. I don't think there was any major differences in the block casting of the 360's, but all the other stuff bolted to the engine might mean swapping out stuff or getting aftermarket stuff to make it fit and work. All in all, you're in for a lot of work and fiddling around with it :-)
I swapped a 3.9L V-6 out of my '85 Ram and dropped a 5.9L V-8 that came out of a wrecked '96. I was told it would not work, but it sure did. Took me ONE day to do the swap and make it work. The biggest issue was the wiring. The computer and wiring harness on the 5.9L came out of a truck that had an auto tranny. The tranny I had was stick. I had to short some wires together to fool the computer into thinking it was in drive (actually, it ended up being reverse, but it worked). I had to remove the backup lights and short the sockets so it would run. I also had to buy a flywheel since the 360 is externally balanced...$380 just for a flywheel, ouch!

ok forget about the 360
are you telling me that the 318 in the 92 dodge van will be a direct fit?
that would be great!!
i assume that the exaust manifolds and computer would need to be swaped out too but can you tell me if it will bolt up to the trans and any other things i would come across.
thanks again.

Use the 5.2 out of the van-it should be a magnum engine. If so then do not change JTEC over- just put the engine in and use all the truck stuff on it. Use the trucks intake/exhaust/throttle body/injectors/computer/wiring. You are just going to use the vans bare engine. The programming form the 5.9 to the 5.2 is not that far off, it should run fine like that-it will not well at all with the vans computer-92 -95 is a huge difference in programming.
