Default Smell and Poor Mileage...Pump?

I have a 94 dodge ram 1500 1/2 ton318 V8 (only 83,000miles). I am experiencing a strong gas smell when first starting my truck and when it comes to a stop or is just sitting there running. The mileage seems to be fine/normal when I run all freeway, but when a majority of my miles are the short trips to work and that I get terrible mileage. I have noticed my gas mileage to drop alot, now getting into the single digits per gallon. The thing that baffles me is that I just replaced my fuel pump (NAPA part) about six months ago. To me this sounds like a regulator...and from what I understand the regulator, pump, and filter are all one cohesive unit. Does it sound right to replace this again...or does anyone have some other ideas as to what the cause could be. I kind of feel that part was defective because ever since we replaced it my gas gauge has been off.

the fuel filter should be seperate, I'd think. Check under the hood, I changed one in a 86.5 Nissan HardBody and it made a world of difference. Check your manuel.

There is no separate fuel filter that I know of. I talked to the dealer when I replaced it the first time because I was unsure of the filter and pump being together, and now found out that the regulator is in there is well. The part must have been defective...but want to see if anyone has any ideas on what else it could be before I deal with dropping the tank again.

you smell gas, and have noticely bad mpg on short trips. did you check the tank itself, maybe you have a slight hole in it somewhere.

I have yet to find any gas under my vehicle when it sits so I am not sure about there being a leak. The weird thing is the scent seems to more so come from the engine compartment (front), but I cannot say for sure that that is where it is from.

are you sure that the fuel filter is not a seperate unit, cause that is really what it sounds like. i work at a service center and we replace fuel filters on all sorts of cars, foreign and domestic, and i have never seen a car or truck with the fuel filter not being a seperate piece.

but i guess if you say that you checked it, what do i know.
