Make sure the parking brake is fully released. Pull it up by hand.

What year, model?

Good luck with your ride.

Ok here goes...,
From what I have seen on most vechiles, the light is caused by a "flipper switch". If you have a loss of pressure in one system (ie the rear brakes) for whatever reason (to include induced durring a beed ect),the will come on. It will not go back off untill you reset the flipper. There are fancy and special ways to do this, but it can be done manually. It involves first ensuring you know which way the switch is set. This is done by forcing the fail to either the rear or the front. Open the bleeder valve on the rear and with the engine running, press the brake. Next...
Hold that thought, before you do anything, test that this is your problem. follow your schematic and let me know if it is being caused by this switch (as this is a bit of a pain to describe typing and if not the fault, it will save me a few keystrokes!).

* When troubleshooting AND unsure of the problem, always start by replacing the cheapest items first *

So, I would still replace the switch.
Just because the plunger moves easily doesn't mean this silly part is not broken.
IF the trouble persists, then this bit has been eliminated from the list of possibilities.
