Sloppy Shifter
We have a 94 Stealth R/T automatic with about 58,000 miles on it. We bought it new. The shifter has gotten really sloppy feeling. It still shifts from park to drive or reverse fine, but the shifter feels like it is about to come off in our hands. Is there any way to tighten it up without dropping the tranny?
I think there is a nut on the shifter linkage in the console that loosens up over time. Mines has some slop in it, but I've yet to open things up to see what I can do about it.
You may also want to check out your shifter assembly bushings. The stock ones are and rubber and can wear out over time. I had the same problem with mine. I believe 3sx sells replacement ones. I ended up getting an aluminum bearing kit and the "slop" is gone.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips. You have both been most helpful. Can I gain access to the area by popping up the trim ring and the plastic piece that indicates what gear I am in? If so, is there anything I need to watch out for other than breaking the plastic pieces. Living in the desert, plastics get quite brittle. Also, I assume the padding on the stick lifts straight up once the set screw is removed. Amy other tips would be appreciated.
I've never attempted to tighten mine up...because I didn't want to break any of the brittle plastic pieces.

If it's just the linkage, then yes. These are the plastic ones "thestealth" mentioned. You should be able to get at it by removing the trim. If it turns out to be the assembly bushings you'll need to remove the floor console to get at 'em. These bushings are rubber.
