Post Need info on engine swap

Hey there!

I just got myself a '92 Stealth and I would really like some info on this car. I pretty much just got into this car and don't know much about them. I know it's pretty much the same car as the 3000gt. I have a non turbo and I'm looking to convert it to the turbo model. I might swap the motor or just convert it to a single turbo. This all depends on the dollar figures. I would need to know a little more about the car in order to figure this out. What I would like to know are specs and the difference in internals. I've read posts that say this modification isn't worth it, but honestly I have nothing but time. This is a project car and I'm doing this for fun.

I'm looking forward to your opinions and comments.

Thanks!

I honestly have never gotten into the swap from NA to turbo because remember that the twinturbo cars included AWD, and AW steering, and other controls, etc. I have heard of one guy in Los Banos, CA when I lived there that supposedly took his RT/TT and put in a fives speed FWD to save in weight....but I was never given my repeated invitation to show me the car so i can't say the setup is really feasible (or even ever happened)...especially going from your FWD to a TT setup rather than vice versa...you'd need PCM etc.

However, I am swapping my TT motor that has a rod knock. IF you get to where you want a whole setup maybe I can help you out with parts....You should know that parts for the TT motor are REALLY expensive...hence the reason I bought another whole complete (with turbos) engine to put in place rather than rebuild...I have not opened and I don't know if my 91 with non-forged crank is any good or not. I also haven't decided if I'll use my turbos and heads and get them pumped up a little from 3sx.com so they may be available...depending on my financial needs at the time you ask.

Meanwhile, talk to the guys at 3sx.com. They've done a lot on both sides. I can tell you if you have the higher performance (RT but not TT) engine then you're running a LOT more compression and it would be tough to go too far with a turbo on that...it already requires premium grade from the factory.

Good luck....if you decide you're hunting for parts in the next year or two just send me a message and I'll see if I have any good pieces for you after I make the swap.

adding to above, buying a tt model would give you four wheel drive which would be better than having FWD after conversion. First need to know what you have. There are two NA motors, one is SOHC and other is DOHC. SOHC came with around 165hp and almost 200 pounds of torque. If you going to do anything to it performance wise is put a single turbo. There is a sticky for NA upgrade bible, i recommend reading it. DOHC motors came with 220hp and can be converted to TT. The most effective way to get TT motor is to buy one with turbos. Is it auto or manual?
Base model would be SOHC motor while rt or es should have DOHC motor.
you can check 3sxperformance.com for some parts.
Converting to TT sometimes can cost almost as much as it is to buy rt/tt model

Yeah...I hear you both! I knew from the start this was going to be a challenging project. The car was given to me, it has a blown head gasket so I figured... might as well play with it a little. My main thing was to compare dollar signs and to see what conversion was going to be the best bet for my money.

I have the SOHC model and it's Auto, I want to make it 5 speed. My idea was to do the full conversion, from the TT motor,AWD and all the other details that will come with the swap. Although the AWD will be a big plus to do, If I don't do it I don't have much to lose but traction. The car will be much lighter and that's always good lol, I'm trying to keep it positive here Does anyone know where I can parts?

I thought of selling the car and just buying a TT model but the prices I have seen out there are ridiculous. If you have one and want to sell it let me know!

converting to TT/AWD will cost more than buying one that already is. Auto is a big disadvantage and swapping to 5 speed will help a lot. Most places i seen motors for sale is ebay. You can find complete motor with twin turbos on it with trans. Also some junk yards sometimes will have complete motor. You will need pedal assembly and shifter with all the linkages for manual swap.

There is a vr4 for sale that i know of. He wants 6k for it.

I have a '94 5-speed manual SOHC Stealth and thought about an engine swap, only wanted to find a different, newer engine to drop in due to previous stated problem of parts being so expensive and hard to find on the Stealth. Looked into a 350 or Corvette engine to swap but would have been too expensive and technically challenging, so gave up and looked for better ways to maximize performance on the SOHC. Here's the discussion I started on that subject:

https://dodgeforum.com/forum/showthr...ht=engine+swap

There are other threads you'll find on this board about this topic if you click on "Search" in the menu and type "engine swap". You'll find a lot of useful information.

You may not want to part with the car you have now but it might be worth investigating whether to just sell it and buy a used Stealth w/TT engine and doing an engine rebuild. The rebuild kits are fairly inexpensive and it would save a ton of labor versus doing an engine swap. The TT engines are hard to find and you may end up having to do a rebuild anyway even if you are lucky enough to find one.

I've heard good things about 3smotors.com but I would just sell it and by tt if thats what you want it would be alot cheaper.
