Default Confusing Stealth ES/Base situation

Hello all, I just recently purchased a very nice inside and out 1993 Dodge Stealth ES. 97,000 original miles, interior is in great shape etc. etc. Anyway, for what ever reason, I neglected to really pay attention the engine. I mean the car is in such great shape and ran fast and nice I didn't think twice about it. It finally dawned on me two days later that the engine in the car is the SOHC engine, and I am 100 percent certain. It has the ES badging on the car, which is why I assumed, (and I know what happens when you do) it was DOHC. I just ran a vehicle report on the car, never in an accident, I am the 5th owner in 16 years, which I think is pretty good, considering the last owner only had it for 5 months. Can you guys give me any insight as to why there is the base model engine in my ES? I thought maybe an accident and they replaced parts with an ES but no accidents reported. Perhaps a blown engine and for whatever reason replaced with an SOHC motor? But I don't understand why. Please help.

Possibly because an SOHC engine would probably be less expensive and easier to come by.
