Default 2.7 swap

I have a 2001 Status ESwith a 2.7. Just recently the engine gave way at 130,000. I have read all the bad stuff about these engines and have have priced them (expensive). Is there any other engine I could swap in to replace the 2.7. I really dont want to put another "sludgemonster" in it. I have found some 3.0s below $1000. Let me know.

It blew a headgasket and filled the crankcase with water. It welded the bearings to the crank. Spun every bearing in the journals.

The 3.0 will not work. The 3.0 came in the Stratus Coupe's not sedans. The Stratus Coupe is made by Mitsubishi not Dodge, so completely different engine makers. I have heard of a local shop around me that will replace the 2.7 in the Sedan's with a 3.5. I haven't looked into this since I have a Coupe.

Yeah I found that info about the Mitsu right after I posted the thread. I have heard of the swap on the Intrepid but not on a Stratus. I heard the 2.7 in the Stratus is different than the Intrepid. So if the 2.7 from an Intrepid will not fit the Status then the 3.5 probably wont either right? I dont know. Are the 2003 and later 2.7s OK? I do not want to put another lemon in there. And I definitely dont a repo on my credit.
