sometimes they lock up, prob just a lot of junk trapped in it or a worn spring. had a '79 chevy with a tired spring, had to take it down evey other month (my first car). watch your fingers!! evern though the spring may be worn, it still has quite a bit of energy stored. just think of a seat belt rubbing on your finger doing about 20mph. trust me, it hurts.
